The 8th habit builds upon the world bestseller 7 habits of highly successful people and becomes a 3rd dimension to help you to find your voice and then to inspire others to greatness. Something you may say that would be appropriate for every business leader today. It does this through providing a wider context of culture and organisation in which personal and interpersonal habits are cultivated.
To do this “you must organise your culture and your people” Covey says so they find their voice and become empowered to supervise themselves rather than be managed or controlled, they become motivated from within not from without.
People struggle to find themselves in today’s workplace as other people’s views and opinions to often erodes the self image and prevents empowered belief happening. If you look at any person who is successful in all fields it’s often come from the belief and positive reinforcement that has come from another person that takes their beliefs and raises it to higher levels so people can achieve.
Many leaders think that leadership is about position as they climb the slippery pole to the top. Well Covey says “ its about the choices we make to be there” a good example would be Gandi who led others because of his choices and his believes that captivated others to lead the world.
We must focus on continually development of the body, mind, heart and the spirit and reinforce self belief and image.
So its about having an organisation that instead of being:-
Political, controlling, micromanaging, blame, no trust where people become dehumanised. We are often termed as an Expense not and Asset. Build an organisation that builds on 8th habit principles.
In our work with many organisations leaders and managers would benefit greatly either reading his works or attending one of his seminars. Have you implemented the 8th habit in your organisation if so we would welcome you to comment.
